Jane Blanchard

Eventuality

“Do you believe in life after love?”

         —line sung by Cher

Two decades and a half ago,

I never really focused on

the simple language of this song,

a favorite of a man far gone.

I later came to realize

he long desired to make me mad

by playing it ad nauseam

till I gave up on what we had.

In time I found a better man

to share more than a double bed,

and we have dared and done a lot

while leaning toward what lies ahead.

Now popping back into the news,

this song reminds me how much pain

I suffered as I struggled to

accept great loss for greater gain.
